Tane Mahuta
A cathedral of pillars in silvergrey
roofed with emerald foliage leading my way
memories of centuries their trunks reflect
while the Lord of Kauri Forest they protect
not many of your kind did last
in thousands of years that have passed
ever since you’ve been standing tall
witnessing your far spread kingdom fall
thy crown stroking the velvet sky
still mourning those who had to die
fragile and small I stand beneath
the forest whisp’ring songs so sweet
in awe I pay respect to thee
touched by your ancient melody
safely under your sacred shroud
to you I will return I’ve vowed
enigma the Silver Fern still holds
is how the circle of life unfolds
pray that the pathway I shall travel
will tempt this secret to unravel
if providence decides I may

Tane Mahuta is New Zealand's hoogste Kauri Tree, en hij groeit in Waipoua Forest in het noorden van het Noordereiland. Zijn massieve grijs-witte stam is 59 voet hoog tot aan de eerste tak. Dit enorme exemplaar is een overblijfsel van het uitgestrekte oeroude subtropische regenwoud dat hier ooit groeide, een overlevende van meer dan tweehonderd jaar intensieve houtkap. Door het tellen van jaarringen van gevelde bomen van gelijke omvang, is Tane Mahuta's geschatte leeftijd vastgesteld op zo'n 2100 jaar.
